PHOSPHATE COATINGS

PHOSPHATE COATINGS   are conversion coatings that produce a uniform, adherent, non-metallic, non-reflective, crystalline, water insoluble finish on iron or steel. The two most common phosphate coatings are Zinc Phosphate and Manganese Phosphate. These adhesive coatings provide an excellent base for painting. Coating thickness for zinc phosphate is between .0002 and .0006 inches and manganese phosphate coatings are typically between .0002 and .0004 inches thick.

APPEARANCE:   The color of zinc and manganese phosphate coatings range from gray to black. These coatings are typically followed by a supplementary treatment of lubricating oil conforming to military specifications.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:   Phosphate coatings treated with a suplementary corrosion preventative (oil or other corrosion inhibitor) offer excellent resistance to corrosion. Zinc based coatings provide higher corrosion resistance than manganese.

OTHER PROPERTIES:   Phosphate coatings readily absorb lubricating oils to prevent galling, scuffing, scoring, or seizing of moving parts. Manganese coatings are more resistant to alkaline environments than zinc coatings. Manganese provides more resistance to heat than zinc phosphate coatings, but should not be exposed to temperatures above 400° F. Zinc phosphate coatings should not be used on parts where contact with alkaline materials or temperatures above 225° are expected.

SUMMARY:   Phosphate coatings are used extensively as a base for paint in governmental, commercial, and consumer products. It has applications in the automotive, machine tool, firearms, appliance, hardware, heavy equipment, and many other industries.
