SOLID FILM LUBRICANTS

SOLID FILM LUBRICANTS   , also known as, "Dry Film Lubricants" are thin films of solid lubricating materials, such as MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide), graphite, or fluorinated polymers, which are firmly bonded to substrate material with a resin binder. The inherent lubricating properties prevent contact between mating surfaces, reducing friction and wear. Typical application thickness is .0002 to .0005 inches.

There are a wide variety of solid film lubricants in use today. They are formulated with varying insoluble solid pigments "lubricating materials" and use various binding resins or bonding agents. Each formulation has particular strengths and weaknesses that make them suitable for a wide range of applications.

Proper selection of solid film lubricants is determined by the performance the coating must deliver and the operating environment. Performance is generally measured by the coefficient of friction, load carrying capabilities, corrosion resistance, and electrical conductivity. Operating environment considerations include temperature, humidity, pressure, radiation, exposure to oxidization, chemical exposure, etc.

OTHER PROPERTIES:   Generally, the key benifits of solid film lubricants are:

  • Decreased coefficient of friction and increased service life of coated products;
  • Effective lubrication over a wide range of operating temperatures (-400° to above 2000° F);
  • Increased corrosion protection;
  • Resistance to chemicals, fuels, and other contaminants;
  • High load carrying capacities (some exceeding 250,000 psi);
  • Prevents galvanic corrosion at the point of contact of two dissimilar metals;
  • Extends shelf life of stored products;
  • Eliminates dust, dirt, and debris buildup that is common on machinery and equipment that use conventional grease or oils.

APPLICATIONS:   Solid film lubricants are used extensively in military, commercial, and consumer products. It is commonly used on aircraft and automotive parts, appliances, ball joints, bearings, bolts, cams, computer products, conveyors, fasteners, firearms, gears, hinges, industrial equipment, levers, military equipment, o-rings, rollers, screw machine products, slides, tools, valves, and virtually any moving parts.
